End of Season Regatta and Peter Green Memorial Trophy 2006

THE Autumn regatta was held on Saturday 16th of September. OD Dan Counihan set the course up outside the pier to the south of the shipping channel. The first race was over a triangular course, the second on a windward leeward and the third on a standard Olympic setup. The optimist fleet raced over the same courses in separate races. In the main fleet Des Fitzgerald won race one from David Lee. In the second race some confusion over the leeward mark allowed Liam Lynch and Ian Magowan to enjoy a brief lead before the junior sailors caught up with them again. Maeve Counihan had a great win followed by Des and David in third. For the last race conditions had deteriorated again and it was wet and windy. Gillian Fitzgerald sailed a great race to win even though Des was briefly ahead of her at the last mark.

IN the Optimist fleet the racing was also very close. Daniel Browne won the first race followed by Matthew Galvin and Austin Hynes. In the second race however Daniel could only manage 4th place with Kate Magowan in first, Matthew Galvin second again and Micheal Lynch third. In the last race it was all to play for but Daniel led to the finish. At the last mark Matthew, Kate and Michael were all together with all the places still wide open. Michael nosedived and spent a few minutes bailing, Matthew capsized and Kate took her chance to finish in second place.

AFTERWARDS in the clubhouse when the results were announced it was Daniel in first, Kate second and Matthew third. In the main fleet Des Fitzgerald won from David Lee and Gillian Fitzgerald. The best Mirror prize went to Eoghan O’ Buchualla who also was the youngest sailor on the day. The awards for sailor of the year were also presented: Diarmuid and Annette Dineen were the overall winners, Patrick Moore was second and took the Laser sailor of the year and Eoghan Hand in third took the Topper award. Matthew Galvin won the Optimist sailor of the year, with Michael Lynch second and Austin Hynes third.

ALL of the prizes were presented by Marie Greene and the Peter Greene Memorial Trophy was won by Des Fitzgerald. Micheal Greene gave a short speech about the work of ‘Croi’ and the progress made there over the past year.
